Preserve Your Oral Health With Endodontic Surgery

Dr. Glasper and her team at Revive Dental in Marriottsville, MD, do everything they can to preserve your natural teeth and avoid extraction. Endodontic surgery effectively treats severely damaged or infected dental pulp and the tissues surrounding the roots of the tooth. It is commonly referred to as a root canal procedure.

What is involved in endodontic surgery?

To diagnose whether or not a root canal is necessary, a thorough examination of the tooth is conducted, including X-rays to determine the extent of the infection or damage. A local anesthetic is administered to numb the surrounding tissues of the tooth and to ensure your comfort during the procedure.  Our dentist will access the pulp chamber and root canals by making a small hole in the crown of the tooth. The infected or damaged pulp, as well as any debris or bacteria, is removed from the root canal with specialized instruments. A space is created to accommodate the filling material before the canals are thoroughly cleaned and disinfected to curtail the risk of reinfection. A biocompatible material called gutta-percha is used to fill the tooth and seal off the root canals. Once filled, the access hole is sealed with a filling or crown to restore the tooth's integrity and function.

What are the benefits of endodontic surgery?

  • Pain relief: Endodontic surgery effectively relieves the often excruciating toothache pain caused by dental pulp inflammation.
  • Preservation of natural tooth: Endodontic surgery can save a tooth that would otherwise need to be extracted by removing the infected pulp and disinfecting the root canals
  • Prevention of further infection: Endodontic surgery prevents the reintroduction of bacteria into the tooth root.
  • Improvement of oral health: Endodontic surgery prevents further complications by helping to maintain the stability of the tooth and its surrounding structures. This promotes better overall oral health.
